Urban mowing practicesUrban Landworks lawn mowing & Fertilizing in bloomington, MN takes great pride in the services we provide. We maintain the highest standards as we make your lawn care experience worry-free and your lawn looking great all throughout the season! Proper mowing practices are essential to your lawn’s health and maintenance. We believe that these strategies and notes will be both beneficial to you and your lawn! General Lawn Mowing Mowing too short damages grass root systems, thins the lawn, decreases disease resistance, and increases your weed population. What we practice at Urban Landworks is to cut your turf at a height of at least 3 inches for the spring and try not to cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade per mowing (we try to cut when your grass is 4-5 inches high during the growing season). We keep our cutting blades sharp (sharpen daily), and do not collect your clippings (after Spring Yard cleanups), as they return nutrients to the soil as they decompose. You may ask…why don’t we “bag” clippings during the whole season? The answer: Blowing your grass clippings back into the lawn is much more valuable for your lawn as it returns nutrients to the soil as the clippings decompose. The best thing we can do to fight disease on your lawn is to mow properly! Spring Lawn Cleanups Spring Yard cleanups provide an awakening for your yard as it comes out of its winter slumber! We get rid of leaves that may have fallen after our fall service and we provide a de-thatch. A de-thatch is needed when your lawn is matted down or has a lot of dried, brown grass in it. This must be done during the spring, because if it’s done any later it will damage the growing grass. Once your grass greens up and it’s done later, de-thatching your lawn will tear up your new grass that is growing in. Fall Lawn Cleanups Fall Yard cleanups gets rid of leaves and organic matter that build up over the season. It’s a good idea to get rid of leaves on your lawns as they can lead to disease as they rot over winter. However, when mulched properly several times this can lead to a healthier lawn come spring as the organic matter has broken down and provided nutrients to your hungry lawn. Shrub Trimming The best time to prune depends upon the plant. Trim early-spring-flowering shrubs right after they bloom. Summer-flowering plants should be clipped in winter or early spring. For non-flowering plants, trim after new growth has completely formed. Irrigation Start up| Blow out| Maintenace Urban Landworks offers sprinkler system startup, in-season maintenance, and fall shutdown of your system. To keep your lawn healthy year-round, it needs one inch of rain per week. If weather is dry, we suggest watering your lawn every day in each place your sprinkler covers. Watering your lawn in short intervals many times a week is much better than watering once week for an extended period. The multiple watering’s allows your roots to grow deeper and they don’t become water logged. For wetter conditions such as early spring and late fall the process can be stepped back to every other day with the same shorter intervals. Watering is your first line of response to lawn disease and damage to help your lawn recover. Fertilizer/Weed Control Urban Landworks provides a 5-step program which begins in the spring time as your turf is starting to green and it ends just after Halloween to provide your lawn with food over the winter months. We also provide crabgrass and weed control treatments in bloomington MN and surrounding cities starting with a pre-emergent in the spring and a weed spray in mid to late July along with the fertilizer to also give that turfgrass a boost! Aeration Core Aeration loosens the soil to improve the flow of air, water and fertilizers to the grass roots. Aerating your lawn also controls thatch build up, relieves compacted soil, and stimulates root development, creating a healthier lawn. This is one of the best things you can do for your lawn once a year. De-thatching does not need to be done every year, whereas Aeration can be done every year and it is the healthiest additional service we can do for your lawn.
